About Rhino Spice
My name is Daron Torrens (aka DT/Rhino), founder and President of Rhino Spice Inc. I grew up on a grain farm in Smiley, Saskatchewan, where I learned the value of hard work and perseverance. After earning my B.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering in 1993, I moved to Alberta. Before I left, my mom asked what I needed, and my response was simple—I wanted a recipe book filled with my favourite meals. That book sparked my passion for cooking. Over the years, I have surrounded myself with friends who share the same enthusiasm, from professional chefs to fellow home cooks, each contributing to my culinary journey.
The nickname "Rhino" originated from my days on the hockey rink, where I was known for my unstoppable play style. Although the game has changed over time, the name has stuck with me.
Fast forward to 2020, a year of challenges and new beginnings. I have always experimented with different seasonings but often found commercial blends contain additives or hidden ingredients. While working from home, my wife Kelly and I began blending our own spices, determined to create an all-natural, multipurpose seasoning that could enhance more than just meat. The first trial resulted in what we now call our Original blend, a versatile seasoning that quickly became a staple in our kitchen. From there, we developed Ol’ Smokey and Hot Ol’ Smokey, each adding its own unique twist.
That summer, we shared samples with friends, family, chefs, and colleagues, receiving enthusiastic feedback and creative ideas for new uses. Our blends weren’t just great for grilling, they worked on vegetables, eggs, popcorn, french fries, and even in cocktails like Caesars and Bloody Marys. After multiple requests to purchase our seasonings, Kelly and I knew we had something special, Rhino Spice Inc. was born.
